Artificial reforestation allows the timbered stand to be harvested sooner than with natural regeneration. Seedlings are planted on a defined spacing, whereas natural regeneration is simply allowing the stand to regenerate with whatever grows naturally. Artificially reforested stands can typically be harvested beginning at 15 years old, where a naturally regenerated stand will need to be 17 to 18 years old before the first thinning operation can be conducted.
